In a groundbreaking year for China's sci-tech sector, 2023 witnessed stellar achievements across various domains.
The home-grown C919 aircraft marked a historic moment with its first and third delivery on May 28 and December 9 respectively. The achievement reflects China's growing prowess in civil aviation.
China's commitment to carbon peaking and neutrality goals materialized with the launch of its first offshore carbon capture and storage project on June 1. Conducted in the East China Sea, this initiative showcased innovative solutions for reducing carbon emissions associated with offshore oil extraction.
Besides these, Chinese scientists transformed sugar production by achieving precise sugar synthesis from carbon dioxide. This breakthrough significantly shortened the time required for sugar production, opening new possibilities for sustainable and efficient sugar synthesis.
Meanwhile, addressing the escalating demand for high computing power in the AI era, a team from Tsinghua University unveiled the world's first memory-resistor integrated chip. Published in the journal Science, this chip's unified storage and computing approach offers a promising solution to challenges faced by traditional architecture, paving the way for enhanced computing capabilities.
On October 11, the inaugural voyage of China's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered ship marked a breakthrough in applying hydrogen fuel cell technology to inland river navigation. This green initiative, used on the Yangtze River, promises a cleaner and sustainable future for waterborne transportation.
In addition, on October 29, China's space station watched a historic rendezvous as Shenzhou-17 met with Shenzhou-16. This marks a pivotal step in the country’s human spaceflight endeavors, with a total of 20 astronauts having ventured into space since Shenzhou-5's groundbreaking journey 20 years ago. As the space station completes construction, it transitions into a decade-long phase of application and development, fostering extended human presence in space for various scientific experiments.
These achievements underscore China's commitment to sci-tech innovation, environmental sustainability, and pioneering advancements on land, ocean and space, marking 2023 as a year of remarkable progress.
